Our Managing Partner recently spoke to 'Breakthrough' magazine to share his aspirations for the new UK Chapter of I2SL.

The challenge of delivering energy efficient and environmentally friendly space for science is one that I2SL: International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories is tackling head on, with their recent launch here in the UK, along with their Labs2Zero programme.

Why is it important for I2SL to be active in the UK?

The ‘Concordat for the Environmental Sustainability of Research’ has signalled the importance of sustainable operations and buildings to funders across the UK research enterprise and beyond.

I2SL has been working for 20 years to grow it’s global footprint, and whilst there are many forums already in place here in the UK, there is a gap.

I2SL provide a forum solely focused on facilities for science. Bringing in an established organisation allows us to hit the ground running, building and expanding on the already extensive lab efficiency knowledge and resources that exist within the UK and across the world.

What impact will they have?

The chapter will be focused on the needs of UK science, including an events programme to aid understanding of building performance, challenges to reaching NetZero and to explore solutions.

The real gamechanger comes in the shape of I2SL’s Lab Benchmarking tool which will enable benchmarking in the sustainable performance of science buildings, bringing to the fore opportunities for improvement by understanding what ‘best practice’ looks like.

Who is involved?

With over 80 organisations already involved, from a breadth of areas reaching across the science and research space, there is huge richness to the insights to be gained and shared, helping to accelerate change.
