Let's start with a quick fire round

Coffee or tea?
Coffee

Favourite holiday destination?
Somewhere sunny, maybe Southeast Asia - Indonesia or Vietnam

One thing we don’t know about you?
I’m into all sorts of music genres but particularly those close to Bristol’s culture, including electronic dance music and drum and bass. It's part of the city's DNA – I recently met Goldie when I was walking the dog!

Cats or dogs?
Dogs!

Nick, give us a synopsis of your career so far

I’ve been designing and delivering laboratories for over 12 years, starting off with design and build contractor practices. Over time I’ve transitioned to traditional design and consultancy, most recently to work with one of the largest architectural practices in the world, working with major corporations, developers and end users to deliver speculative lab space across the UK and mainland Europe.

What’s kept you in the industry?

Every project is unique! That means assuming nothing and getting behind the details of the technical challenges and workflows of scientists every single time. That's kept me excited and enthused…

… and of course, the trajectory that science and technology is taking as they look to the next generation of therapies, emerging medicines and innovative solutions. There's a collective ethos in that and it makes me proud of the work I do.

What’s your USP?

Listening to people. That’s one of the things that attracted me to Oberlanders. We share that as a core value.

People often have great ideas to instil in their client base. What makes the difference is adhering to and listening to what a client’s challenges and constraints are and questioning that in a positive way to open them to new ideas.

Why Oberlanders?

People openly listen and encourage me to share my thinking and ideas. Science and Technology has been a core sector for Oberlanders since inception and the plethora of sectors in which we’re delivering is exciting! I’m energised about bringing new areas of expertise into that.

What are your first impressions of the Practice?

Very forward thinking and very collaborative. I’ve not encountered the usual challenges you face when trying to align in any new business. I already feel integrated with the team and part of the trajectory for moving forward.

What does success look like for you over the next 12 months?

Increasing Oberlanders presence in some key locations and familiarising people with the brand and all the good stuff it stands for. I’m keen to broaden that footprint while maintaining the professionalism of meeting clients' nuanced requirements for every project. Making a positive impact in the built environment!
